Walnut Park Tigers Roar into the Future

These are historical times in education.  We are redefining how we will provide the skills and abilities our children will need to be successful in their future.  Walnut Park Elementary School is preparing our children to be college and career ready.

The school community of Walnut Park Elementary is just beginning the adventure of this new era in education but we are doing it together and with one goal in mind for our children.  We are opening doors to possibilities for them by giving them the foundation upon which they can build their future learning. Teachers are implementing ways to develop 21st Century Skills (collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity) into every lesson so our children can solve problems and create new solutions by working with others.  Children are mastering Common Core State Standards (CCSS) which establish a new emphasis on deeper learning and understanding of basic skills. Parents are learning about the new expectations and how they can support their child at home and be involved with the learning at school.

Our school chant captures our united focus as we move into the future.

We are tigers hear our roar.

We are here to open doors.

Our future is ours to earn

as day by day we come to learn

skills in reading, writing, math.

We are on the college path.

We are tigers hear our roars!

Attendance Matters!

School attendance is vital to students' achievement. Students who develop patterns of good attendance are much more likely to be successful both academically and socially. Attendance Matters! When students attend school they get better grades, and score better on standardized test. It is our responsibility to teach students the importance of attendance now so they are prepared for the future. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that their children attend school daily. When parents are at work, students should be safe at school.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 School Year!

Every year, Walnut Park E.S. has gotten better at providing our children with the education they will need to flourish in their futures.  This year, we will focus our new growth in three areas- parent involvement, project based learning, and cooperative group learning.  As we address these three areas as a school community (students, parents, teachers, residents, and school staff) we will strengthen the foundation of our school and continue to grow.

Parents are a key factor in how well their children learn.  Parent involvement will include volunteerism at the school, in-services and workshops around academics, and family fun nights (Literacy Night, Technology and Math Night, and Science Night).  Together, we will develop more and better ways for parents to ensure that their children will be successful as they grow up and choose a career or college path.

Project based learning is a design of using a topic, problem, or theme as a focus that is addressed using the skills developed in math, science, reading, writing, and the arts.  Our school will begin the year with every grade using recycling as the topic of their project based learning.  Students at every level will read and research information about recycling, develop ways to address the possibilities for recycling, and discuss, write, and draw about their ideas.  Families will definitely be involved in this learning.

Cooperative group learning is not just working with others in a group.  It is working with others in a meaningful, organized setting with individual and group responsibilities and tasks.  Establishing cooperative settings in classrooms is not an easy task and teachers and students will struggle with this structure in the beginning.  However, by December we will see how well the classes are doing with this structure and how much more students are learning as a result.

As you can see, we have an ambitious set of goals for the year.  You can also see why we get better every year.  Be sure you are a part of our continued effort to open doors for our children and their futures.  Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!
